Diana Telares

A badana is a strip obtained from the concentric layers that wrap around the banana plant stem once they have dried. This material is used in each piece of this series, woven on the island of La Palma, a landscape where banana plantations cover vast areas to produce an essential food: the Canary banana.
On this occasion, Jamile and Diana bring together their passion to create original pieces, based on the idea of redesigning baskets, bundles, and bags traditionally used for carrying in rural contexts, along with hats to protect from the sun.

These pieces are biodegradable or compostable and are developed using high-warp loom techniques, basketry, pleated weaving, and plant fiber binding methods. At the same time, the natural tone of the banana fiber is preserved and combined with cochineal dye, also sourced locally, producing pinkish and purple hues that interact with ochres and beiges.
